Ingredients
  

For the cake
  • 1 box cake mix (your favorite flavor, yellow or vanilla are great choices)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream Opt for full-fat for richer flavor
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the topping
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Enhances sweetness and adds caramel flavor
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Adds warmth and elevates sweetness
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional) Toasted walnuts or pecans add depth

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, melted butter, eggs, sour cream, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined and smooth, about 2 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together brown sugar, cinnamon, and optional nuts.
Layering
  1. Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared pan, spreading evenly.
  2. Sprinkle half of the brown sugar mixture over the batter.
  3. Spread the remaining cake batter over the sugar mixture, and sprinkle the rest of the brown sugar topping on top.
Baking and Cooling
  1. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Serve warm with powdered sugar and whipped cream. Pairs wonderfully with coffee or spiced chai tea. Can be stored in an airtight container for 3-4 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
